What to expect
The Bread and Butter Thing redistributes good quality, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste. There is no eligibility criteria or referral needed, everyone is welcome.
This affordable food club offers low cost weekly shopping bags made up of fruit and veg, fridge favourites and cupboard staples donated from high street supermarkets, food manufacturers and farmers.
The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT) never know what they’re going to get from day to day, which means each week your bag of food will be different. But it is always quality, fresh produce. You will probably need to top up from the shops as well, but this food will go a long way to helping you feed your family if you are on a budget.
The food is delivered to your collection hub once a week, and you collect from there, or have someone collect for you. There is a low cost for the food you collect, based on the amount. A standard set is three bags of shopping: one chilled, one cupboard and one fruit/veg. You can choose from one bag of a bit of everything for an individual, or up to several bags for a large family. The current bag options are either meat or vegetarian. They don’t currently offer specific dietary options, e.g. halal or gluten free.
It’s free to join and there’s no eligibility criteria or affordability checks. Simply text 07860 063 304 with your full name, postcode, and the name of the hub you will be collecting from. The hub nearest in Peterborough is Bedford Hall in Thorney, but there’s also one in Market Deeping, and you can search for others on their website, click here.
More information
TBBT will send you a reminder text the day before each hub pick up day. You don’t have to use TBBT every week – if you don’t reply or reply ‘NO’ to their delivery text, you’ll still be asked in future weeks, unless you decide not to be a member anymore – in that case, just tell a member of staff or text ‘STOP’. You can also change your mind and restart at any time.
Someone else can collect on your behalf if you can’t make it, but if you place an order and then change your mind, be sure to text ‘CANCEL’ to them so your food doesn’t go to waste.
It’s free to become a member of the food club.
There’s a small cost for every food collection you order, depending on the size of the order. You can pay by cash or card on collection at your local hub. They also accept Healthy Start Vouchers. See their website for more details.
