A General Practitioner (GP) is a doctor who can treat all common medical conditions and refer patients to hospitals and other medical services for urgent and specialist treatment. Find out more about how to register with a GP here.
NHS mental health support you can access without talking to a GP:
If you are experiencing a common or mild/moderate mental health challenge like anxiety or depression, you can contact the Psychological Wellbeing Service (PWS) from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) – click here for more information.
You don’t need to talk to a GP first or have a diagnosis to access PWS. PWS might then suggest a talking therapy or counselling for you. This service is free. Leaflets about PWS are available in a range of languages – click here to visit their resources page.
Other sources of mental health support you can access yourself:
There are other local services and organisations that offer mental health support that don’t need a diagnosis or referral from a GP. Find out more here.
You can also find mental health support online – find out more here.
NHS mental health support accessed via a GP:
If your GP feels you need specialist support with your mental health, they may refer you to the Primary Care Mental Health Service (PCMHS) – click here for more information.
Primary Care Mental Health Service leaflets are available in a range of languages – click here to visit their resources page.
