What to expect:
Founded in 2002, FACET is a charity which provides training and day care to adults with disabilities within the Fenland area. Their main place of teaching is in March.
Courses are educational and life skill classes for all elements of supporting adults with a range of learning disabilities and physical conditions, which allow for their students to fulfil their highest potential.
They offer three main areas within the tuition they provide: horticulture, woodwork, and Towards Independence.
Working towards independence:
- Catering and cooking
- Computing
- Sports and healthy living
- English, Maths and Science
- Arts and crafts
- Drama and music
Woodwork
During woodwork sessions, students will craft a wide range of different products using a range of different materials. Students create planters, benches and seasonal products, these are available for purchase at FACET's shops and can be ordered in advanced.
Horticulture
Students are taught about different species of plants and the different environments they need to grow in. Plants, trees and shrubs are grown with a range of different products including hanging baskets and tubs, and are available for purchase from their charity shops.
FACET currently have two charity shops in Fenland, which are in March and Whittlesey. These charity shops offer students the opportunity to develop skills within a retail environment, which could help them to progress into working within the retail sector. The charity shops are also used to sell the crafts created by their students, or the plants grown by them.
They have over 120 students who attend over their course each week; some for a single session, others will attend for up to 10 sessions. They work on a 1:4 ratio - tutors will have four students each, which ensures that they can provide the best care and tuition for the students. They also offer 1-1 support if it is required; this would be carried out either by their own highly-trained staff, or through the use of external support workers.
