Back to Activities

FLAP welcomes people looking to build confidence, improve wellbeing, and connect with others through supported volunteering and meaningful animal care activities. Located in PE14. Travel support is available for eligible participants.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • it can improve confidence and self-esteem - taking part in meaningful activities, learning new skills, and achieving goals helps participants build confidence and develop a positive sense of self;
  • it can reduce isolation and encourages social connection - the programme provides opportunities to meet new people, build friendships, and feel part of a supportive community, which can improve emotional wellbeing;
  • it supports mental and emotional wellbeing - spending time in a positive outdoor environment, engaging with animals, and participating in structured activities can help reduce stress, improve mood, and promote overall wellbeing.

"Volunteering at the Rescue has had a profound impact on my life. It has provided me with a sense of purpose and belonging, and it has helped me to develop a strong sense of self-confidence. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute my time to somewhere I call my safe space and to make a positive difference in the lives of the feathered ducks and birds." - Volunteer

"Volunteering at the duck rescue centre has honestly been one of the best things I’ve done. I’ve been going for just under a year now, and it’s become something I look forward to every week. The people there are so caring, and welcoming - you don’t just feel like a volunteer, you feel like you’re part of a little community that genuinely wants to make a difference." - Volunteer

What to expect

What happens during sessions?
FLAP provides supported volunteering opportunities involving animal care, wellbeing activities, and practical outdoor tasks. Participants build confidence, learn new skills, improve wellbeing and connect with others in a supportive and welcoming environment. Activities may include feeding and caring for animals, helping around the rescue centre, gardening, and maintenance tasks.

Do I need to register or book ahead?
Yes. All participants should contact the team before attending so they can discuss individual needs, arrange a suitable start date, and ensure appropriate support is in place.

What happens when I attend for the first time?
A member of the team will welcome you, give you a tour of the site, explain health and safety requirements, and introduce you to the activities and animals. They understand that attending somewhere new can feel daunting, and participants are encouraged to contact the team in advance with any questions or concerns. They are happy to discuss support needs before the first session.

Do I need any previous experience?
No. FLAP is suitable for complete beginners and no previous animal care or volunteering experience is required. Training, guidance, and support are provided throughout.

How long are sessions?
Sessions typically last around 3 to 4 hours, depending on the day and the participant's individual circumstances, however, they are really flexible so just reach out to find out how you can get involved if your times and needs are different.

Do I have to stay for the whole session?
No. The FLAP team understands that everyone's needs and abilities are different. Participants can discuss flexible attendance arrangements with the team and are free to leave early if needed.
