March Amateur Theatre Group (MATG)

Back to Activities

March Amateur Theatre Group stages everything from musicals to plays and welcomes all. Get involved on stage, backstage, or in tech - no experience needed. Open to all ages and full of opportunities. Come along and give it a try.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • It makes it easier to meet new people and form friendships when working towards a common goal (putting on a show) and social connection is important for wellbeing. They also have social events just to get together and have some fun.
  • Everyone can contribute in some way (and often learn new skills) to be a valued member of the theatrical community, improving self esteem and confidence.
  • Their concerts, sing‑alongs, and musical theatre productions create a fun and welcoming environment where people can enjoy performing together. Many participants say the experience helps them relax and feel more connected. And when the curtain falls and the audience applauds, the sense of accomplishment is truly special.

'I moved to March not knowing anyone, and as you get older it's harder to meet people other than work. These sing-alongs are great and everyone is really friendly.' - MATG Attendee.

What to expect:

Anyone is welcome to participate, and no prior experience is required, with all ages encouraged to join.
Social events such as their movie sing‑alongs are free. They show a film—like Mamma Mia!—on a big screen with on‑screen lyrics so everyone can sing along, or simply watch the film if they prefer. MATG members are always present to greet attendees and offer help if needed, and people are free to leave at any time.

Shows such as plays or musicals are led by a single Director for the entire production. There are many roles available, giving performers a different experience, such as working on set painting or costume-making.

To be ‘on stage’, participants need to audition by reading or singing in front of a small group to help determine which part suits them best, and they are welcome to bring someone for support.

For ‘off‑stage’ roles, they work in teams made up of both experienced members and newcomers. Participants can try various activities to discover what they enjoy most, and they may bring someone along if they wish. Everyone is able to help—there is no audition for off‑stage roles.

More information:

March Amateur Theatre Group (MATG), formerly known as the March and District Amateur Operatic Society, has a long history of performing in the Fens, and has evolved to reflect the wide range of shows they now produce. The group embraces its operatic roots but has adopted a new name that better represents its current identity, offering musical theatre, concerts, and occasional plays. MATG regularly hosts ‘come and meet us’ events, including popular movie sing‑alongs, community quizzes, and a growing programme of productions. Their approach is welcoming and community‑focused, encouraging people to watch or take part in performances as they begin an exciting new chapter in their ongoing development

All the venues they use are accessible and have toilets. Refreshments are free during rehearsals but there is a small charge in the social events. There are no clothing, footwear or equipment requirements. Venues have parking.

MATG holds movie sing‑alongs every other month at March Town Hall. These events are free to attend. They show a musical film with on‑screen lyrics so attendees can sing along if they wish. Optional refreshments, such as popcorn, are available for a small charge.

For productions, helping off-stage before the show is completely free, and volunteers are treated to as much tea and biscuits as they can enjoy.

MATG welcomes everyone, and formal and informal carers can attend for free.

To take part in a production on stage, individuals need to be members of the Group for insurance purposes. Those helping off-stage on show nights are also required to be members for the same reason. The Group offers a very reasonable membership fee, which varies depending on age.
