COPE Talking Together Telephone Discussion Groups

Back to Activities

COPE is an organisation run by older people for older people. It runs Talking Together telephone-based discussion groups and interactive Zoom events, covering a range of interesting topics.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • it offers a chance to connect and socialise with other people;
  • it offers an opportunity to learn new things and exchange ideas and experiences;
  • it can reduce loneliness and social isolation amongst older adults, some of whom may struggle to fully interact with their communities due to limited mobility, lack of transport or caring responsibilities.

What to expect

COPE (Cambridge Older People’s Enterprise) offers two free programmes that older adults can access from home:

Talking Together is a series of weekly telephone-based discussion groups focusing on a variety of subjects, facilitated by individuals skilled in their fields. You can join the discussion using a landline or mobile phone. An operator will connect you to the group for each session. Previous discussion leaders have included University of Cambridge scientists, local historians, representatives from National Trust sites, and members of the arts community.

Participatory Zoom Events are one-off sessions on different topics which offer the opportunity to share conversation, creativity and learning. They are led by skilled facilitators. You will receive materials for each session in advance, to help you engage with the topic. The Zoom programmes include captions for those with hearing limitations.

More information

Both of these programmes are free, but you need to register to take part. You can register by calling 01223 364303 or emailing  [email protected]. The list of upcoming sessions is listed on the Talking Together page on the COPE website.

COPE organises a range of other activities, trips and events for older people. They also campaign on issues affecting older people in Cambridgeshire. You can become a member of COPE for free, and get involved in all of their activities. Visit their website for more information.

COPE produce a bi-monthly newsletter with information, interesting articles, puzzles and activities. You can see previous editions on their website.
