Duke of Edinburgh's Award Volunteers

Back to Activities

Support young people to thrive. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award builds confidence, leadership, communication, and teamwork. The Cambridgeshire Open Award Centre is recruiting volunteers for roles from expedition support to admin. Training available.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • You can get satisfaction from helping young people grow and develop
  • You can put your love of the outdoors to use
  • You can join a friendly team of other like-minded people

What to expect

Do you want to help young people develop and practice skills that will support them in college, university, work, and beyond? Participants say that doing their Duke of Edinburgh's Award (DofE) boosts their self-belief and resilience, improves their mental wellbeing, and helps them overcome personal challenges and you could be part of their journey!

The DofE Centre is always looking for volunteers to support in a wide range of roles, such as:

  • Expeditions. People who are keen on the outdoors and happy to work directly with young people are always warmly welcomed. Whether you are qualified or not, access to any required training will be provided.
  • Marketing and promoting the centre
  • Writing funding applications
  • Website management
  • And many other roles

Meet the team and some of the volunteers, and read why they do it, on this page.

If you feel you could be a volunteer in any capacity, please do get in touch. You can email the team or fill in their contact form at the bottom of this page.

It is only with the support of volunteers that the Centre can continue to grow and offer opportunities for young people across the county.

More information

All volunteers who come in contact with young people will be subject to DBS and reference checks and training in line with the DofE Safeguarding Policy.

Most aspects of volunteering are free. The DofE centre will cover required training such as safeguarding, first aid, and where needed expedition-related training (e.g. walking or camping leader qualifications). Mileage for driving is reimbursed and campsite fees are paid.

Volunteers supporting day walks and expeditions are expected to provide their own personal equipment and food.
